I know that when you’re considering working with someone, you have a lot of questions and want to know more about who they are and what it’s like to work with them. So I’ve responded to some of the most frequently asked questions as thoroughly as possible, interview-style. Click on any question and it’ll expand to show you my answer.
How long have you been doing what you do and how did you get to be a Brand Messaging Coach?
My journey to Brand Messaging Coach goes back about 20 years. Back then, I was a Business Analyst, working with clients to understand their businesses, digging deep into the underlying causes of the problems they were having, analyzing options, and supporting my clients to solutions. I would come home at night and share with my husband (who is a graphic designer) some of the things I was doing – including the questions and activities I took my clients through, building trusting relationships, knowing how to quickly understand their business and industry, finding solutions to my clients’ problems, creating training and writing guides to get everyone up to speed – and he said “MY clients need that!”
So, about 15 years ago, we opened a first full-service branding agency. I took my process for discovering and analyzing a client’s business and developed a brand discovery process. It consisted of a series of questions, activities, and interviews (with key management, employees, and clients), along with a competitive analysis of the market.
From that, we would develop their entire brand…from each element of their message and the visual elements that brought that to life. I’ve always been a natural writer and being able to find words that moved companies, their employees, and their clients was so rewarding.
I’ll never forget having the opportunity to share the new message to the entire organization for one client, sharing the brand story and bringing a room full of women entrepreneurs to tears because they related so strongly to the message.
As much as I loved evolving brands for companies – especially their message – it was cost prohibitive for smaller businesses to get the benefit of working with a full service agency (it still is). So we developed a small business workshop to help smaller businesses and solopreneurs to work directly with us by their side, guiding them through our process.
15 years ago.
And it didn’t take.
One of our mentors said to us: “This is such a great idea – but you’re ahead of your time.”
We ran that agency for a few years, and I’ve gone back and forth since then working in other agencies and doing traditional business analysis, continuing to hone my skills and my processes.
In late 2015, I decided it was time to go back into business for myself. My husband was happy at the agency he was at and didn’t want to start another agency with me – which worked out just fine because I knew I wanted to do it differently this time. Thankfully, the business environment changed and group coaching and programs were much more the norms, and the vision I had for bringing big business branding to the small business owner could finally become a reality.
After spending months working on my own message (it’s always hardest working on our own stuff) and reviewing the process to make sure it still got results (it does!), I was able to start helping business owners like you Make Your Message ROAR®, and I haven’t looked back!
What kind of businesses do you work with?
Through my career, I’ve had the pleasure of working with a lot of different types of businesses. Actresses and speakers, product and service based businesses of all kinds, government and non-profit organizations.
The beauty of the process I’ve developed is that it helps any business dig deep into the things that matter, finding the core of what makes that business special, and brings that to life. I often say that the process helps you understand your business from the inside out and the outside in.
You’ll hear me say that I work with ambitious women business owners. This is where my heart and passion lies. It’s easier than ever to start a business, and this is such an empowering opportunity for women all over the world. But the statistics are sobering…conservatively, 50% of all businesses fail within the first 5 years. I’ve heard staggering numbers as high as 98% failing in the first 10 years.
I want to help more women beat these odds. (That doesn’t mean I don’t work with men – in fact I love my male clients, too.) But I have such heartfelt desire to support ambitious women business owners…the ones who have true expertise to share with the world…the ones who are dedicated, willing to do what it takes, and know that the hard work to lay the right strategic foundation in their business will bring them greater chance of success. Is that you?
What happens if you haven’t yet worked with people in my field?
While I’ve worked with clients in a variety of industries, industry-specific experience isn’t what makes me successful. In fact, even as a Business Analyst, one of the things that made me so successful was my ability to quickly learn new industries and businesses because I know exactly the right questions to ask. And honestly…YOU are the one that needs to know your business and industry. YOU are the expert at understanding that. Working with me, using my process, helps you find the words that help you stand out in your market. So together, we have the combination of knowledge and experience to get you the results you’re after.
How are you different from other “business coaches”?
Can I just hire you to develop my message for me?
I no longer do done-for-you brand messaging development for a couple of reasons. First, it would cost $10,000-$15,000 or more to do for you, which doesn’t help me serve more business owners.
But most importantly…now more than ever, it’s important that your brand message is the most authentic reflection of what you’re trying to do, and that comes from deep inside you. In the online space, you’ll often hear talk about the know-like-trust factor. People buy from people they know, like, and trust. I help you find a One-of-a-kind way to share your point of view with your market, but it’s YOUR point of view which makes you the most Relatable. You just need someone to help guide you through the process, and ask the right questions, to help you bring that to life…and that’s what I LOVE doing.
What type of personality do you work best with and what is expected of me?
I love working with business owners who are in it for the long haul. You have the skills, expertise, and knowledge of your industry and are truly an expert at what you do. You are ambitious, hard-working, intelligent, focused and determined.
Being a high-achiever myself, I work best with business owners who are action-oriented and willing to do the work. You KNOW you have amazing value to bring to the world, and you want the words that help you make the biggest impact.
Because I pour my heart and soul into my clients and their businesses, you also must be fun, loving, and giving. We’re going to be spending a lot of time together…I want us to enjoy that time.
Who is this program NOT going to work for?
I believe that messaging is a strategic foundation for any successful business. But I want to be sure it’s the right time for you to invest and focus on this.
If you’re not sure what type of business you want, or your specific area of expertise, then you’re not ready for Messaging Mastery. While many of my clients report getting more clarity in their focus and niche, I recommend spending time and attention on figuring out what kind of business to create before investing in your message.
If you’re not making any money in your business yet, and don’t have money to support yourself while you build your business, it’s not the right time to invest in my programs. Messaging development takes time, and I don’t want you to be worried about your most basic financial needs. I suggest that you work on generating some income (even with a part time job or side hustle) so that you can commit the time and mental energy to do this important, creative work without the additional stress of paying the bills. I offer weekly Facebook Live trainings and provide opportunities to ask your questions, supporting you until you’re ready for more.
And finally, I give a lot of myself…my time, my energy, my expertise…and I care a lot for my clients and their success. So I don’t work with people who aren’t willing to do the work, or who make excuses why they don’t want to do each and every step. It’s a process…sometimes it’s hard. You may have done activities like this, but never EXACTLY like this…in this order. I’ll be with you every step of the way, but YOU have to be willing to work through the tough stuff to get to the reward of an amazing message that will truly position you in the market. I don’t want you to waste your money “buying another program”. I want to work with people who want successful businesses – and honestly, who are fun to be around!
